Book Rec – Sabriel by Garth Nix

Hello everyone! I don’t have any updates on my own writing at the moment (it has been an interesting month to say the least) but I DO have something almost as good: a book I think you should go read right now!

A friend told me about Sabriel months ago, and I kept putting it off because I’m busy and the cover didn’t look that interesting. I finally decided to read it and I was floored. The writing is so good! Nix truly has a talent for creating compelling characters and filling you with a sense of adventure.

Here’s the synopsis.

Since childhood, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who refuse to stay dead. But now her father, the Abhorson, is missing, and Sabriel must cross into that world to find him. With Mogget, whose feline form hides a powerful, perhaps malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage, Sabriel travels deep into the Old Kingdom. There she confronts an evil that threatens much more than her life and comes face-to-face with her own hidden destiny. . . .

If you end up giving it a read, let me know what you think!

Product Recommendation – Neater Feeder

If you’re like me (and who isn’t?) you have a small, strange cat or dog that likes to knock their food or water bowl over. Despite all of the “No! Don’t you do it!”s you throw at them, they still persist. Whether it’s at 2 am or 8 am, there is a loud water bowl being “dinked” around the bathroom.

Well my friends, welcome to the future: the Neater Feeder. Since switching to the Neater Feeder my cat has been simply UNABLE to knock over his food or water. It’s super easy to dump out and clean and it has made my life immeasurably happier.

As always, my product recommendations are not sponsored, they are just things that I like that I think you should try!

Avarice Touched Update

If you’ve been following this site for a while, you may be wondering “Where in the world is Avarice Touched?” If you are brand new, Avarice Touched is the fantasy novel I am creating with my cousin, LeTeisha Newton. It is the tale of two very different women and their power and powerlessness in the kingdom of The Closing Fist.

So what’s the hold up? Well we got about 66,000 words (around 200 pages) in before we realized that one of our main story hinges was based on something that no longer made sense because of other changes. So we did the only thing you can do in that situation: we brainstormed!

The new and reworked world is deeper, more grounded and much more unique than the old one and we’re both so excited about the new aspects of the story that arose from this seemingly disastrous circumstance. Unfortunately, all 200 pages have to be rewritten, and there are at least 300 more pages to go. So yeah, there’s going to be a bit more of a delay.

Thanks for your patience! In the meantime please feel free to help support us as we work towards this endeavor.

Product Recommendation – Siggi’s Yogurt

I hate yogurt. I have hated yogurt since I was a child. If you are a woman, you know that this is a no-no, as most girls are encouraged to eat yogurt for their health. But the chunks of strawberry felt like snot in my mouth and no other flavor tasted nice enough to eat so I have been yogurt-less for years, much to my mother’s dismay.

Until one day I discovered Siggi’s Filmjolk Drinkable Yogurt. It is made of all natural ingredients, has waaay less sugar and is smooth and delicious. I drink one every single day, which is amazing. In addition to Pilates (who even am I anymore?) the yogurt has been responsible for weight loss around my stomach.

My favorite is the strawberry, but I found I was also able to drink the blueberry, raspberry and vanilla versions with no trouble. Raspberry is definitely the tartest.  I also experimented with the non-drinkable version, but the Icelandic Style Yogurt was much too thick for my taste.

Whichever you prefer, this is a great brand to try if you either find greek yogurt too tart, normal yogurt too sweet or just hate yogurt in general.

As always, I was not paid to write this review, I just wanted to share something cool I discovered with all of you!

Product Recommendation – Litter Genie

This blog post is in NO WAY paid for or asked for by Litter Genie.

So the other day my mother called me and talked my head off for over an hour. One of the many things we talked about was the present I sent her: a Litter Genie.

You see, my mother has (the last time I counted) 11 cats. That’s a lot of cats. She keeps a very clean home, and it really matters to her that people don’t smell “cat” when they walk in. Now for the most part she does a good job, but whenever I stay with her I end up in the spare room, which has become a bit of a cat haven since it is mostly unused. And it STANK.

So I got the idea of sending her a litter genie. How did I find out about it? My roommate bought it for me soon after we moved in together and it CHANGED OUR LIVES. My mother, I must say, really didn’t believe me when I told her how amazing this thing is, but now she’s a believer and wants to buy more of them!

A little about the product: You dump dirty  cat stuff into it and it is sealed up tight so the smell cannot get out. It’s a great alternative to having to clean the cat litter and then immediately carry the gross stuff out of the house to prevent a smell. It’s easy, convenient and resulted in me actually just doing the cat litter more because it was right there and took just a few seconds to use. Anyway her call reminded me to tell the world about this product. If you own a cat, get yourself a genie and then you can tweet me about how awesome it is. You’re welcome!

Birchbox and Other Ideas

Currently, I use this site to post about my writing, but I am considering using it as a blog as well. There are so many things I want to share with you all, from thoughts about research and the writing process to products I’ve tried that I want to recommend.

One of those products is Birchbox. As a bit of a tomboy growing up, makeup and hair care and all of those things were very confusing to me. I had no interest in them, there were too many different products to experiment, etc. Well that has changed over this past year with my Birchbox subscription. For goodness sake, I was even talking about dry shampoo with a coworker the other day and she was just so excited that she got to “girl out with” me lol. So anyway I recommend giving it a try if you’re a noob like me and want to learn all about what works for you. Here’s my code to sign up:

There is also a men’s version:
